The Right Age Category: Pre-Schoolers
At three years old, your child falls within the Aquabliss Pre-Schoolers program, which begins at 30 months (two and a half years). This is the first Aquabliss program where children enter the water without a parent: from 30 months, toddlers are in the water with their teacher and classmates, not with Mum or Dad. For most families, this is the first time their toddler has ever been in any structured learning environment without a parent present. The Pre-Schoolers program is an ability-based, three-level program. The three levels are Starfish, Jellyfish, and Goldfish. Progression through the levels is driven by demonstrated skill, not by the passing of time or by age.The Three Pre-Schooler Levels Explained
Starfish: The Starting Point
Starfish is designed for toddlers who are new to independent swimming lessons. It does not assume any prior swim experience beyond comfort in the water. Starfish focuses on water confidence, safe water entry and exit, learning to follow instructions from a teacher, and introducing the concept of buoyancy. Children who have previously attended the Aquabliss Babybliss programme with a parent will arrive at Starfish with a head start in water confidence; children starting fresh will be met exactly where they are.Jellyfish: Building Skills
Jellyfish builds on the water confidence established in Starfish. Children begin to explore kicking, floating on their front and back, and early movement through the water with guidance from the teacher. The focus shifts from pure confidence to the beginning of technical skill development.Goldfish: Introducing Freestyle and Backstroke
Goldfish introduces the foundational elements of freestyle and backstroke, including arm movement and the early stages of breathing technique. By the time a child completes the Goldfish level, they have a foundation in the two primary swimming strokes and are ready to move into the Kids Learn to Swim program. How Placement Works at Aquabliss
Aquabliss uses ability-based placement. This means that a three-year-old who has been in the water regularly and is comfortable with independent swimming attempts will not be placed in the same level as a three-year-old who is just beginning their independent swim journey. An assessment at the first lesson determines the most appropriate starting point. If your child has not previously attended structured swimming lessons, Starfish is the appropriate starting level for virtually all three-year-olds. You can enrol online for all three Pre-Schooler levels as long as you are ready to begin within the next seven days. There is no need to wait for the next school term.| ✦ What if my child already knows how to swim?: Three-year-olds who can swim independently with reasonable technique may be ready to move into the Kids Learn to Swim program, which follows the Pre-Schooler program and introduces straight-arm freestyle with breathing. If you think your child may be ahead of the Pre-Schooler level, contact your nearest Aquabliss location for an ability assessment before enrolment. |
The Independence Milestone
The most significant change at the Pre-Schoolers level is not swimming at all: it is the independence aspect. Three-year-olds in the Pre-Schoolers program are in the water with a teacher for the first time without their parent. For some toddlers this is a natural and easy transition. For others it takes a lesson or two to adjust. Aquabliss teachers are skilled at managing this transition. The approach is gradual, child-led, and supportive. There are no forced submersions and no attempts to push children beyond their comfort level before they are ready. The safety focus and the confidence-first approach are consistent across all levels of the Pre-Schoolers program.| Aquabliss Pre-Schoolers: Your 3-Year-Old’s Swim Journey Starts Here No term schedule. Frequently Asked Questions
Many children start their structured swimming journey at three with no prior exposure beyond bath time, and they do absolutely fine. The Starfish level is designed to build from a zero baseline. Aquabliss teachers are trained in child development and early childhood education and are experienced at reading and responding to individual toddler responses in the water.
The timeline varies significantly by child and by how frequently they attend. A child attending weekly lessons who takes to the water well might progress through all three levels in one to two years. A child with more water anxiety or who attends less frequently will take longer. Aquabliss offers a School Holiday Intensive Program where one month of lessons is delivered in a single week, which can meaningfully accelerate progress for children who are close to a level transition.
