As a parent, the safety of your child is paramount, especially when it comes to water activities. Swimming and playing in water are not only fun but are also great ways to keep your children active and healthy. However, with the joys of water come the risks, and it’s crucial to equip your child with the skills they need to stay safe. This is where PASS Class, which stands for Personal Aquatic Safety Skills, comes in.

Understanding the Risks: Drowning Statistics in Australia
Drowning remains a significant concern in Australia, a country surrounded by water and blessed with beautiful beaches and swimming pools. According to the Royal Life Saving Society Australia, in the 2019-2020 financial year, there were 248 drowning deaths recorded across the country. Alarmingly, children under the age of five are particularly at risk, with drowning being the leading cause of accidental death in this age group.

The Importance of Water Safety Education
The motto “Anyone can drown, no one should!” underscores the importance of water safety education for everyone, especially children. PASS Class focuses on providing the essential skills needed to help prevent drowning incidents. Our comprehensive program teaches children how to stay safe in and around water, what to do in an emergency, and how to respond effectively if someone else is in trouble.

Key Components of PASS Class
- Swimming Skills: Building strong swimming capabilities is the first step in water safety. Our classes ensure that children are confident and competent swimmers.
- Safety Techniques: We emphasize critical safety techniques, such as understanding the dangers of water, recognizing hazardous conditions, and learning safe entry and exit methods.
- Rescue Skills: Teaching children how to assist others without putting themselves at risk is crucial. The principle of “Reach or throw, don’t go!” is a cornerstone of our PASS Class training. This means teaching kids to use a stick, towel, or flotation device to reach out to someone in trouble, or throwing them a floating aid, rather than jumping in and potentially endangering themselves.

Understanding Rips: A Major Hazard in Australian Waters
Rips are strong currents that can quickly pull swimmers away from the shore, and they are one of the most dangerous hazards in Australian waters. According to Surf Life Saving Australia, rips are responsible for an estimated 90% of beach rescues. Recognizing and understanding how to respond to rips is a part of our PASS Class curriculum for our older swimmers, in Marlin level and above. We teach how to identify and respond to rips by simulating a rip in the pool. #blisskids then experience what a rip could feel like and put into practise what we teach them if they get caught in one – stay calm, conserve energy, signal for help.

Water safety is a critical life skill that every child should learn. With drowning statistics in Australia highlighting the need for comprehensive water safety education, PASS Class offers a structured and effective way to ensure your child is prepared. Here at Aquabliss we are not just teaching kids to swim well, we are equipping and empowering them with the right skills and knowledge to be safe in and around water.

By ensuring your child attends their regular lesson during PASS Class week, you’re giving them the tools they need to enjoy water activities safely. Our expert instructors are dedicated to providing a supportive and educational environment where your child can learn these lifesaving skills.
