Introducing your baby to the water should be a joyful, gentle experience. At Aquabliss Swim School, we believe early exposure to water builds not only swim skills but also confidence, coordination, and bonding with parents.
But we also know that babies need time to adjust—and what better way to help them feel safe than through fun, play-based water activities?
Whether you’re at home or in one of our warm indoor pools, here are five fun and simple water activities you can try to help your little one feel relaxed and happy in the water.
1. Splash and Smile Time
Start by holding your baby securely against your chest and slowly walking around the pool. Gently splash the water with your hands or feet, and encourage your baby to do the same. Smile, laugh, and make it a joyful time!
Benefits:
- Builds trust in the water
- Helps baby associate water with fun and affection
- Great for first-timers in the pool

2. Sing & Float
Babies love songs—and they love movement. While supporting your baby under the arms or back, gently rock them back and forth while singing familiar nursery rhymes like “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
Pro tip: Try floating your baby on their back (with support) while you sing. This introduces them to floating in a calm, enjoyable way.
Benefits:
- Encourages muscle relaxation
- Combines rhythm and movement
- Builds confidence with face and ears near the water
3. Toy Chase Game
Bring floating toys into the water and encourage your baby to reach, splash, and move toward them. Use toys with bright colours or ones that squeak and squirt to grab their attention.
Benefits:
- Boosts motor skills and coordination
- Encourages playful movement in water
- Makes lessons feel like a game
At Aquabliss, our baby classes use carefully chosen toys and tools to promote learning through play.
4. Gentle Water Pours
Let your baby feel water flowing gently over their hands, feet, shoulders, and eventually their head using a small cup or watering can. Start slow and keep the atmosphere relaxed and fun.
Benefits:
- Helps desensitise baby to water on the face
- Builds comfort for future submersion and rinsing
- Mimics natural water exposure in lessons
This activity can be easily done at home during bath time too!
5. Peek-a-Boo Dips
Hold your baby close, dip down into the water (just enough to get a little splash on both of you), then come up with a big smile and say “peek-a-boo!” This introduces submersion gradually while making it feel like a game.
Benefits:
- Prepares baby for breath control exercises
- Reduces fear of splashes or brief immersion
- Promotes bonding and laughter
Baby Swimming Should Be Safe, Gentle, and Fun
These activities are more than just games—they’re valuable ways to help your baby feel safe, confident, and happy in the water. Always follow your baby’s cues and never force an activity. Let them progress at their own pace.
And remember, having a swim teacher can make all the difference. At Aquabliss, our warm, indoor pools and experienced teachers create a stress-free environment where babies can flourish.
